For anyone that stumbles across this journal, please be aware that this is my personal list of fanfiction recommendations. This journal was started for my own reference purposes but if anyone discovers it, please remember these warnings:
1. The vast majority of these works will contain graphic descriptions of sex. I may/may not remember to put up any warning about the sexual practices contained therein so read at your own risk.
2. These works may depict homosexual relationships. If you can't handle this, don't read and definitely don't make any derogatory comments.
3. No profit is being made from recommending these workds of fanfiction and the rights of the respective original authors are not being violated.
Oh and although I am concentrating mostly on Inuyasha these days, I also read widely in the fandoms of FullMetal Alchemist, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Highlander, Stargate SG1, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Saiyuki, Fruits Basket and Rurouni Kenshin.

The Price by Fenikkusuken is the first Inuyasha/Kagome fanfiction I've read and actually like. Not that I've read many I/K fics. It was nominated for best action/adventure by the IYFG among other things and definitely lives up to that reputation. The original characters aren't as annoying as some I've read and the story is pretty good. Naraku is perverted and gloriously evil. The easy acceptance of the existence of youkai in this AU jarred me a little but I suppose it's kind of hard to refute the evidence of a giant dragon youkai ripping up your backyard. I enjoyed it and I'll be keeping track for the next chapter.

Star Wars: TPM - old classics
Nov. 14th, 2009 | 12:26 am
I suddenly had a craving to read these old stories and then, horror of horrors, I realised that I had (a) no idea who wrote them (b) no idea what they were called and (c) no idea where I found them in the first place. Thank goodness for google :D
MJ Lee is a fabulous author and has written:
Pilgrim Soul and A Heaven in Hell's Despair which are two longish fics in the same AU universe. Obi-Wan is a young, captured slave used and abused at a roadside inn where the Roman general, Quintas Gaius (Qui-Gon) finds him. H/C and very very fluffy.
MJ Lee has also written a lovely piece of fluff for Mrs. Hamill's classic "Riding the Wheel of If" saga called Wild Desire. It continues the story of the Overlord of Coruscant and Brother Kenobi. Extremely cute.

Themed request - Sesshoumaru's profession

So I started a thread on Dokuga asking for stories where the author breaks the mould and does NOT have Sesshoumaru as a wealthy, successful businessman. Here is my list of 'to read' fics that I got in response as well as some others I've already read but will keep here for refernce purposes. I might review the ones I particularly like.
Coffee Shop Girl by inufairy-akay. Author.
Wait A Minute, Mr. Postman by Texanlady. Postman. MA
Depravity by emmaren. Garbage man. MA
The title says all :P If you want a hot, steamy and graphic PWP, go for it! I'm not the type to go for a very domineering Sesshoumaru but I enjoyed the story nonetheless.
Persistance by gradualwisd0m. Tattoo artist. MA
Faded Memories by Chie. A variety of jobs such as pizza delivery boy, one-hit-wonder artist and stripper.
This one was a mixture of humour and angst/hc. I loved the different professions the author had Sesshoumaru try out but I think the darker, deeper tone of the fic clashed a little with the lighthearted jobs. I remember reading this when it was still being written and I enjoyed it. It's the author's first attempt at fanfiction which makes me more forgiving of stylistic errors and ooc-ness (especially since I have no grounds to talk :P) and over all its quite enjoyable. Warning: there are strong themes of self-harm.
You're in the Army Now by Chie. Colonel.
Tables Turned by Chie. Kagome's Assistant.
I haven't read this one yet but since there are so many stories out there with Sesshoumaru as the demanding boss and Kagome as his overworked employee/assistant, I like the premise of this story.
You Spin Me Right 'Round by gypsiewine. Stripper. WIP
A Dance to Remember by Blue Moon Vixen. Stripper.
The Weight of Memories by Minerva-one. Author.
Midnight Meets Moonlight by Mujitsu. Museum Owner.
Definitely a Sesshoumaru/Kagome classic. Kagome meets a modern day Sesshoumaru and his feudal-era self takes an interest when he detects his own scent on her. I highly recommend this one.
Not Soon Forgotten by iloveprettysilverhair. Artist.
This one is based on the classic movie "An Affair to Remember" and just as heart-wrenching.

my first work of fanfiction
Nov. 12th, 2009 | 10:32 am
mood:
exhausted
So, I began planning out a summary of events for my first Inuyasha story on the second and began writing it last night. I've already written over 4000 words and I'm pretty happy with most of it. It's just...lacking something. I would have written more but it was 3am and I had to get up at 7am this morning to go to the orthodontist :S
I've also written a lemon one-shot that can be read as a simple PWP or as an addendum to the end of my longer story. It wouldn't leave my head so I had to write it out and it's currently being beta-ed by the kind MissTeak right now. I'll probably only post that after the longer work has been finished. We'll see.
It's really hard for me to assess the quality of my own work. I suppose that's what beta readers are. It's frustrating when I have a good idea in my head but when I write it out it reads so flat and uninspiring on paper. I don't think I have that spark in me that characterises the work of my favourite authors. I want to try though so I'm going to give this my best shot. It might take a while since the 4000 words I've written barely covers the details of the first two paragraphs of my summary.
I think the story will definitely evolve away from the summary, at least slightly. This is probably a good thing since I think my Naraku-resolution part of the story is weak. We'll see how it goes.
I keep wondering if I should post it chapter by chapter or wait to post it until it's entirely complete. This thing will probably number over 20 chapters at least. I want to post as soon as possible and see what other people think of it but I don't want to post a WIP and then get writer's block halfway through. I think I'll just keep writing for now and when I have a sufficient number of chapters-maybe 10?-I'll find a beta willing to do the long term work and see what they think.

I found this story, Exacting Change by AxidentlGoddess, while looking through fanart on Dokuga. It inspired this piece of fanart which is soooo cute!
The jewel is complete and Inuyasha is his usual idiot self and accidentally makes a wish on the Shikon no Tama. A changing bodies story.

Instinct to Run by Pho3niX has only 3 chapters but looks like it'll be very interesting. Good quality grammar and spelling which is nice to see in a new author. Kagome is given insight into the instincts of demons, realises that she has unconsciously been giving out signals and acquires a new suitor.
Angel of Time by cloud is also another new story. Kagome and Sesshoumaru's son visits his parents at various times in their pasts. So far not what you would expect from this plot cliche. Good quality and I hope it continues.

Inuyasha-classics

1. The works of Youkai Yume were probably some of the very first that I read in the Inuyasha fandom and I would describe them as essential reading for any fan of the Sess/Kag pairing. Unfortunately, the author no longer appears to be actively writing although her deviantart page is definitely worth perusing. She is a very skilled artist in addition to being a fabulous author.
On fanfiction.net
On deviantart
Her website
These stories are listed in order of personal preference.
ForgetMeNot is probably the most well know of Youkai Yume's works. It's mushy, OOC at times and absolute fluff and I LOVE it. *happysigh* So cute! Sesshoumaru's opinion of Kagome changes once she helps him recover from an injury. Sounds cliche but that's only because it was one of the originals.
Whispered Dreams is a feudal era AU and whenever I think about its unfinished status I just want to cry. Kagome is a lonely ghost confined to an old ruin who meets and befriends a young Sesshoumaru.
Even Immortals Fall is a lovely oneshot. Sad but also uplifting. It's written from Sesshoumaru's POV.
Love Letter and its sequel Love Life are also excellent AU fics from this authoress where the characters interact in a highschool setting. Love Letter is sweet and cute but unfortunately, Love Life remains unfinished.
Demon's Angel is set in the canon universe. Sesshoumaru repeatedly dreams of Kagome. Naraku plots to break Kagome's bond with Inuyasha and to use her power for his own purposes.
I haven't actually read Blessed Curse and I don't know why so I shall put it here to remind myself to read it. It follows the Beauty and the Beast fairytale but is apparently not an AU and still fits within the feudal universe.
2. Although I haven't read all of Resmiranda's work, I've read enough to know that she is a brilliant author who is able to do something truly unique with the fandom source material. I honestly think the quality of her work is good enough to be professionally published. She is one of those writers who transforms the base characters into something more. I'm sure that if you're a Sess/Kag fan, you've already read her most famous work but for completeness sake I will post about it here.

Tales From the House of the Moon has won many awards and has its own yahoo! group. College student Kagome discovers a fairytale concerning Sesshoumaru and Rin. What is the truth behind the story?
Fugue is set after the end of the Shikon no Tama quest. An adult Kagome discovers a remnant of the mythical past. It's angsty, quiet and lovely.
Tease is completely different. It's light hearted, funny and really just an excuse for some fabulous porn :D
Making the Most of Purgatory is probably my least favourite of Resmiranda's fics that I have read. I think it's because there is a lot of dialogue. It's a one shot about Kagome bumping into future-Sesshoumaru.
3. I also thoroughly enjoy the works of elle6778 and I know many others do as well since some of her stories have been repeatedly nominated for awards on A Single Spark and Dokuga.
On fanfiction.net
On deviantart
A Simple Legacy I,II and II is based on the premise of Kagome making a bargain with Sesshoumaru for his aid in binding Inuyasha's demon blood, which has grown past the control of his sword, in return for a favour. I especially liked how the relationship is given some time to develop. There are a few cliches such as training etc but again, I suspect they would only be considered cliche now since these fics are fairly old in the fandom. Very enjoyable.
Simply Hard is a wonderful little off-shoot from the above series. Pure porn really :D Kagome can't keep her hands off. Hot and definitely not for minors :P
If you thought Simply Hard was steamy, take a look at A Mere Digression. Be prepared to have a meltdown. This is my kind of Sesshoumaru and I think he's pretty much IC with how he deals with the situation.
My memory of A Little Faith is hazy at best. I don't have time to reread and review but I definitely remember enjoying it. It's an AU.
The authoress has written some other stories such as A Latent Destiny (Sess/Kag) which remains unfinished as well as several non-Inuyasha works but I have not read them.
4. I feel obliged to include shadowsweaver1 here as even though I only number one of her stories among my "old favourites", it's one I return to fairly often.
Tears of the Fallen deals with Kagome travelling back and forth between her own time, the feudal era and the era of a young Sesshoumaru. One of the reasons for my love for this story is the character of Toga. I just fell in love with this representation of him and in my mind, he makes up for any of the faults in the fic. Overall, it's a pretty good adventure story with a strong plot, good romance and lively action. One thing that started to annoy me (and I think the author also got fed up with this as indicated by the author's notes) was every chapter ending in tears, usually Kagome's. It may seem like a cool gimmick at first but after 36 chapters my inner Inuyasha is screaming, "Suck it up, wench!". Also, the fairytale motif just made me think of Tales from the House of the Moon. Nonetheless, I highly recommend this one.
I didn't like the premise of Vying for Dominance so I didn't really read beyong the first few chapters. For some reason I couldn't stay interested in Sins of the Father, plus it's incomplete. I read a little of My Experiment and at first it was funny but then I got bored. I haven't tried any of shadowsweaver1's other stories.
5. I can't believe I didn't list this author before now but how could anyone dislike the works of forthright? The queen of drabbles, my own beef with this authoress is that her stories just leave me wanting more and more!
On fanfiction.net
On livejournal
Imperceptible first caught my attention when it was started and it's truly an example of how a relationship can slowly develop without all the cliche tense, steamy moments, training scenes, arm restorations, being suddenly abandoned by Inuyasha/wounded/transported further back in time/being captured by Naraku/saving Rin etc. I think there are approximately 7 more chapters in the series. Don't miss this one!
After seeing what forthright can do in a drabble in Imperceptible, I was really excited when she started Impeccable. It's a modern day AU where Kagome is startled to discover that she is the heir to her Aunt Eimi's fortune, small manor house and enslaved demon butler. Now complete, it really left me longing for more.
Unspoiled is this author's take on the Kagome-is-transported-even-further-back-i
Pale Shadows is a one-shot for Halloween. Again, it left me wanting an entire chaptered fic. Inu no Taisho makes an appearance here which just makes me love it more!
Forthright has also written many non Sess/Kag fics which I MUST mention. I'm not usually a fan of anything non Kag/Sess but the way Forthright builds relationships and characters is irresistible.

6. One of my personal favourites is piratequeen0405. Although a lot more recent than most of the above works, her stories keep me intrigued and frequently make me laugh hysterically.
On fanfiction.net
On livejournal
Dancing with Scissors is a modern day AU where Kagome is left to take care of her niece, Rin, when her parents, Inuyasha and Kikyo are killed in an accident. For Rin's sake, Kagome is forced to interact with her niece's uncle, Sesshoumaru and the Taisho family. While this story is probably one of my favourites, I have to say that her Kagome is very OCC. Not in a bad way, just very different. I mean, do you see canon Kagome drinking, swearing abundantly and writing a sex advice column? No? Well, don't let this put you off as this mature and rather whacky Kagome is fun and you'll find yourself drawn to sympathise with her plight.
Peace Treaty is a feudal era AU in which Kagome, a miko from a noble human family, marries Sesshoumaru, the heir to the West in order to cement a peace treaty between demons and humans who have been warring for generations. Kagome, a warrior priestess figure, faces various challenges such as adapting to life in a youkai stronghold, being the mate of the heir to the West, learning to trust those who were once her enemies and facing betrayal from all sides.
Outmatched is a modern AU where Kagome and Sesshoumaru must negotiate their way through the problems that come with an interspecies relationship. I particularly enjoyed the first half of this story but the later part, especially the last few chapters, felt a bit rushed. I would have liked to see more courting. I really liked piratequeen's Inuyasha in this fic.
7. Nostawen Allesiel has got to be one of the most well-known authors in the fandom simply because she wrote such a great story on A Single Spark then left it hanging for years and years. Her OCs are likeable and entertaining and her gradual story development is interesting. One fault that I can name is something that happens quite often in the fandom-Perfect!Kagome. Kagome without faults irritates me a little but a lot can be forgiven for the superb writing presented in this story.
On fanfiction.net
Laying Amongst Dokatsu approaches epic saga status (or maybe it just seems like that since we've been waiting for so long. The story begins with the well used scenario of Sesshoumaru being seriously injured and Kagome, due to her kind nature, deciding to help heal him. Don't be put off by this summary of the beginning as the plot thickens with the introduction of great OCs, a sinister villain, betrayal and, of course, romance. This story is a must for every Sess/Kag fan.
8. The works of RosieB also greatly influenced my ideas of fandom.

The Once and Future Taiyoukai is a something-goes-wrong-with-the-well-a
The Nightingale is also an incredibly beautiful (and different) story which apparently owes its inspiration to the story of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen.
Ghosts is also a lovely, though angsty, story set after the final battle and Kagome's final return through the well. A modern day Sesshoumaru finds her and proposes an arrangement for two survivors to mutally benefit. Please refer to chapter one of The Cricket's Cage (a collection of one-shots by the author) to grasp the full story.

Forbidden Desires by Wolfye Productions is quite interesting. I like the relationship between Sesshoumaru and his mother and the unusual explanation of the Taisho clan's origins. Unfortunately, it does not appear to be updated often.
To Read:
Discovering the Unknown
EDIT: This story, unfortunately, is not very good. I wasn't even able to get more than 2 chapters in before abandoning it. Kagome and Sesshoumaru are completely out of character. Sesshoumaru's use of language is not in keeping with his canon formality and I hate it when feudal characters use modern phrases and terminology. The final straw though was when halfway through chapter 2, Kagome starts to have "feelings" for Sesshoumaru. Geez, superficial much? In addition, the author's habit of inserting explanatory authors notes in the middle of the text really annoyed me because (a) it broke the flow of the story and (b) they were to explain away the OOCness because "she didn't knwo what to say". If you don't know what to write, why are you writing and posting a story?

Lucky Shot by aimdiscord is surprisingly good. I say surprisingly because the plot summary didn't sound too exciting but I found it while following a link on another author's favourites page so I thought I'd give it a try. I'm glad I did.
I also read The Challenge Posed by the same author. I found this story to be disappointing. I'm not sure why but I just lost interest. I ended up skimming over the chapters in the later part of the story. Maybe I'll try it again another time.

Frivolous Sentimentalities by Tally Mark
This is so cute! The central idea is along the same lines as Tradition by Sunset Miko (also very good) but done in quite a different way. An extremely believable Sesshoumaru.
I also liked Canis familiaris by the same author. It's Pet! Sesshoumaru fic but what there is of it (only four chapters so far) has been done very well. I'm intrigued as to how Sesshoumaru ended up in those circumstances. It's a pity that it hasn't been updated in a while.
Oh and Gone to the Dogs sounds really interesting. Almost a reverse of the above. I've only read the first chapter so far.
I also just read Love After Loss by Miss Teak. Warning, its a WIP that hasn't been updated in ages. I didn't think I would like it but I did. It's an AU story where Kagome and Sesshoumaru are divorced but come into contact again when Rin, their daughter, is diagnosed with leukaemia. Not as good as Wisteria but still surprisingly enjoyable.

Growing Pains by MontiK looks interesting. I've read the first few chapters and the premise of the story appears original. WIP
Wisteria by MissTeak is an older fic that I somehow missed. Sesshoumaru are wholly removed from canon but still set in the feudal era. Very Memoirs of a Geisha but quite enjoyable. Sesshoumaru may seem OOC but I can rationalise this as the Floating World would have been a place of leisure where he could relax. WIP

I had forgotten about this one entirely. From what I now remember, it was good and quite funny. Must reread soon.
The Truth Hurts...In A Good Sorta Way by Carlet
I really enjoyed this fic, especially at first. The premise of the story is that Kagome accidentally comes into contact with a flower whose pollen makes her express every thought that goes through her head out loud for a month. This sounds cliche and silly but it's a lot of fun. I felt the story went a bit downhill in the second half though. There wasn't as much substance and Sesshoumaru is very OOC. The ending seemed a little, well, rushed as well. Nonetheless, a fun read that made me laugh. Go ahead and enjoy yourself.
Oh and here is a new (to me) Inu no Tasisho/Kagome one.
The Longest Journey by Kanna37
I was excited to find this fic but sadly enough, it didn't live up to its potential. The reason for this was because it was just too rushed. The interaction between Kagome and Toga isn't as developed as it could have been. I would have liked to have seen an extended courtship.
I really like the papa/Kagome fics that I've found but they're scarce. One of the reasons that kept me reading Tears of the Fallen by ShadowWeaver1 was her Toga. Best Toga I've read so far and definitely the best part of the story.

Very cute. Shows the relationship between Rin and Sesshoumaru without being overly soppy as well as another, unknown side of the impassive demon lord.

A remake of an unfinished classic. The author's notes can grate on the nerves at times but on the other hand, I enjoyed the fact that she obviously likes to put a bit of authenticity in the story.
